"O Rising Sun, you are the splendor of eternal
light and the sun of justice. O come and enlighten those who sit in darkness
and in the shadow of death."
Dakar
is the westernmost point on the continent of Africa—“where Africa ends its
day,” a recent film narrated. We tend to see more sunsets than sunrises around
here. Still, the light of a new day can give a sense of newness, a sense of
hope, a sense of possibility.
Signs
of God’s justice can do the same. Even the cynic in me gets a sense of newness
and hope when I see people working for—and in the process embodying—God’s
justice. They tend to be small victories, hard to see at times, easy to
minimize, to characterize as insignificant, unimportant.
Then
the sun comes up and it’s a new day. I’m enlightened with possibilities. I’m
the one called out of the shadows of my negativity to embrace what God is up
to.
Come,
O Rising Sun!
Peter
